The Town of
Williamston is pursuing certification as an Audubon Certified Sustainable
Community. What does this
mean? The World Commission on
Environment and Development defined sustainable development as
“development that meets the needs of the present without compromising
the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”.
Audubon International states that sustainable development is
economic development that is in the best interest of the natural
environment and social fabric of the community.
It simply means that we will leave our natural resources for our
children and grandchildren in as good of a condition as they were left for
us while earning a living and developing our people.
Audubon
International of New York will guide the town through a certification
process. This certification
involves educating the public concerning sustainability principles and
encouraging homeowners, businesses, and public facilities to practice
sound principles in achieving ecological, economic development, and social
objectives.
